Why Seoul's music videos keep ending up on a green-painted rooftop

Watch enough Korean music videos and the same set keeps returning: a flat roof, a low parapet, a stainless water tank, and a city running on behind the singer's shoulder. None of it is built for the camera. Seoul has tens of thousands of these roofs, most painted the same shade of green, and a few of them are places you can stand on yourself.

The room on top

The word is 옥탑방 (oktapbang), the rooftop room. Many started as unpermitted additions on low-rise blocks in the 1970s and 1980s: one insulated box with a door opening onto open concrete. Rent is low, summers are punishing and winters worse, and the view is better than anything the paying floors below it get. That arithmetic is why the oktapbang became screen shorthand for a character who is young, short of money, and not yet defeated.

Why everything is green

The colour comes from urethane waterproofing paint, rolled across the deck and up the parapet, reapplied every few years against the summer rains. Directors did not choose it, but they use it. Green holds warm under sodium streetlight and turns cool at blue hour, the parapet gives a clean horizontal to frame a face against, and Namsan (남산) sits in the distance doing the work of an establishing shot.

Where you can actually stand

Euljiro (을지로), the printing district, is the honest version. Small bars and cafés occupy the upper floors of buildings whose ground level is still ink, cut paper, and metal, and their roofs look out over corrugated sheeting and stacked signage rather than towers. In Haebangchon (해방촌), on the north slope of Namsan, the rooftops face the tower head-on, which is why nothing up there is cheap anymore. Both are residential at street level: buy something, keep your voice down after ten, and never climb onto a roof you were not invited onto.
