Why the Seoul in your favorite drama is often Incheon, an hour west

The alley reads as Seoul on screen: narrow, tilted uphill, a shuttered hardware shop holding the corner. But the train that gets you there runs west, and the stop is Dongincheon (동인천), the far end of Line 1. A surprising share of televised Seoul was never filmed in Seoul at all.

Why crews go west

Permits and parking decide more about a shoot than anyone admits. Incheon's older districts offer low, wide streets where a grip truck can sit for eight hours without blocking a bus lane, and a city film office that exists to handle the paperwork. Seoul's photogenic lanes, meanwhile, have mostly been rebuilt to a height that no longer matches the script.

What survives here is scale. Two storeys, tile and painted steel, signage layered decade over decade rather than replaced. A camera set at the bottom of a slope can hold an entire scene in one frame, which is the practical reason these blocks keep reappearing under different fictional addresses.

What to walk, in order

Start at Dongincheon Station on the market side and drop into Sinpo (신포) International Market, a covered run of fried-chicken stalls, fabric shops and dumpling counters that has been feeding the port since long before it was a location. Cut north and the ground rises toward Jayu Park (자유공원), where the stepped paths and stone balustrades do a great deal of quiet work in period scenes.

West of the station is Baedari (배다리), a short secondhand book alley of leaning shelves and handwritten prices. Beyond it, Songwol-dong (송월동) is painted end to end in storybook colour — deliberately built for photographs, and honest about it. The whole loop takes an afternoon at an unhurried pace.

The camera wants what you want: a street narrow enough to hold a whole story in one frame.

When a shoot is actually on

Notices go up on lampposts days ahead, taped A4 sheets giving dates and hours. On the day you will see cones, a folding table of coffee, and residents walking through it all without breaking stride. That is the correct model. Walk around the equipment, keep the lens down, and let the block go back to being a workplace.
