What Welcl Buddyis, and isn'tWelcl Buddy 은 무엇인가 · Welcl Buddyとは · Welcl Buddy是什么
Welcl Buddyis a curated travel-editorial magazine about Korea, Japan, and China, written for foreigners. We cover culture, food, practical tips, itineraries, hidden gems, and pop-culture filming locations — the parts of East Asia that don't fit on a top-10 list.
We are deliberately not a comprehensive travel guide. Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor do that. We sit alongside them, focused on the cultural nuance that turns a polite tourist into a welcomed guest: the bow you didn't know was a 30-degree, the kissaten whose menu is in Japanese only, the hutong inn no guidebook lists.
How we publish — in plain language
Every article starts as a Claude-drafted first version, written against our per-country editorial briefs, and is published on a daily cadence. A human editor then reviews published articles on a rolling basis — verifying specific claims against authoritative sources (Naver, Tabelog, Dianping), replacing photographs, and correcting anything that doesn't hold up with a dated note on the article. Reader-flagged corrections are reviewed within two business days.
AI is a drafting tool. It doesn't get a byline, it doesn't get attributed as an expert, and we don't pretend it's a person. We publish under named human responsibility. This is the price of using AI at all, and it's also why we trust our own articles.
For the full workflow, sourcing standards, and corrections policy, see Editorial Standards.
The editorial collective
Welcl Buddy is run as an editorial collective: a Lead Editor responsible for the entire site, plus contributors based in Korea, Japan, and China who join over time and get named bylines as they publish. We do not use fabricated personas, AI-generated faces, or fake LinkedIn profiles. If a byline is there, the person is real.
The current state of our team is at /about/editors. We are actively recruiting contributors in Tokyo, Kyoto, Shanghai, and Beijing — see that page for how to apply.
The language layer
One thing that makes Welcl Buddy different: we treat language as part of the trip. Native-script terms appear in articles with romanisation and a brief gloss. The Phrasebookcollects useful Korean, Japanese, and Chinese phrases grouped by situation — market, café, taxi, emergency. We are not a fluency course. We are the language part of being there.
Local Buddy — the funnel context
Welcl Buddy is the content-first sister property of Local Buddy, a Seoul travel-buddy matching service. You'll occasionally see in-article callouts on Korea articles pointing to Local Buddy — clearly tagged as sponsored. Those are the only first-party promotions on the site. Display ads come from Google AdSense and are programmatically matched; we don't hand-pick them.
What we do not do
- Contemporary politics, cross-strait or Korea-Japan relations, religious-state controversies.
- Breaking news, celebrity gossip, idol-private-life speculation.
- Pay-for-placement editorial recommendations.
- AI-generated photographs of real places or people.
- Quiet edits — we date our corrections.
